I got a chance to screen the SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water last weekend and I can say with the utmost confidence that it is the craziest cinematic ride I’ve been on in a while. I’m talking weirder than Alice in Wonderland– no wonder N.E.R.D. signed on for the soundtrack.
Clocking in at 93 minutes, I felt like this ran a bit longer than necessary as an adult. However, after observing the entertained kids in the audience, that duration may be forgivable. As a fan who grew up watching the iconic character on Nickelodeon, kudos to the creators for including a lot of the cartoon SpongeBob that we’re used to seeing.
The admirable thing about the movie is that the storyline brings together the best of both the animated world and an updated live action + CG version of your favorite Bikini Bottom characters. This was a great opportunity to please old fans and usher in a new generation of Squarepants lovers.
Overall, SpongeBob is a colorful, clever, and mind-blowing movie fit for both the Adult Swim junkie and the enthusiastic 4-year-old. I literally laughed out loud several times during the screening.
