Movies, Women Handlin’ Business, and Diversity- All of my favorite topics rolled into one this morning!
Quick on the heels of the Academy Awards nominations, Jessica Chastain used her acceptance speech at the 2015 Critics Choice Awards (Thursday, Jan. 15) to bring attention to the entertainment industy’s lack of diversity- specifically, “homophobic, sexist, misogynistic, anti-Semitic, and racist agendas.”
As Jes received the inaugural MVP Award, the A Most Violent Year actress and self-proclaimed feminist said, “Today is Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday, so, it got me thinking about our need to build the strength of diversity in our industry.”
Selma, the film about Martin Luther King Jr. leading the 1960’s voting rights marches, garnered two Oscar noms- Best Picture and Best Song. Although Ava DuVernay recently made history as the FIRST African American woman to be nominated for a Golden Globe in the motion picture directing category, she was not recognized with a nomination. It pains me to type that the Academy also overlooked David Oyelowo in the category of Best Actor.
Jes ended her speech by saying, “I’m an optimist and I can’t help but feel hopeful about the future of film. Especially looking at all these beautiful people in this room. Martin Luther King Jr. said, ‘Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.’ And I would like to encourage everyone in this room to please speak up.”
