Empire Breaks the Rules

I wish I could tell you that I’m doing something wildly exciting tonight, but in reality I’m really loving my couch.

Finally got a chance to watch Fox’s new series, Empire, starring Terrence Howard and Taraji P. Henson.  I’m pretty hooked on the drama at only two episodes in.  Interesting plot, decent songs thus far.  I love that the show covers subjects that are relevant- homophobia, mental illness, interracial relationships- topics that aren’t necessarily covered in urban entertainment.

My only qualm is their use of caricatures from music.  I could do without the Tiana role (I wonder who she’s inspired by, cough, Rihanna).  It would be fascinating to introduce an edgier, independent artist that just signed to Empire Records- perfect foil to the label boss’ son.

Taraji brings an amazing performance to the table, but she can come off as a Love and Hip Hop impression.  Her character seems so much more complicated and the story is anything but predictable, so I’m looking forward to seeing her change as the season progresses.

Hope you guys are having a great Friday night!
